SIZE: The Coppery-Headed Emerald weighs approximately three grams, and is about three inches in length.
COLOR PATTERN: The male Coppery-Headed Emerald has what looks like a bronze skullcap as well as a rump of the same color. He also has a green body and rump. The female has a white underside and a black stripe and trimming on her tail. SHAPE & SILHOUETTE: One of the features of the Coppery-Headed Emerald is that unlike some hummingbirds, it has a slightly curved beak. This is because it forages on small flowers. BEHAVIORS: In addition to small flowers, the Coppery-Headed Emerald also feeds on small invertebrates. One interesting aspect is that the to mate, males form lekes. Lekes are where a conglomeration of males gather and display their colors to the less vibrant females. HABITAT: They are found on the Pacific Slope of Cordillera de Guanacaste in North America. SONGS & CALLS: Recordings of Coppery-Headed Emerald calls can be found at http://www.xeno-canto.org/species/Elvira-cupreiceps. The calls are piercing and high-pitched. FACTS: The curved bill is a special adaptation to it's diet of short flowers. |
